Subject verb agreement
Coding the rules
1-
Subject and Verb should agree in number.
2-
Additional words/ phrases between subject and
verb do not change the number
3-
When two subjects are connected by conjunction “and
“, it takes a plural verb
4-
Either or, Neither Nor , One of the take singular verb
5-
When the nature of subject varies ( one is
singular and other is plural) the verb agrees with the subject nearest to it.
6-
When the subject is followed by words like *as
well as*, *along with* , *besides* etc. the verb is used according to the first
verb
7-
When it is wish or contrary act – in that case ,
we use WERE /ARE
8-
In sentences that begin with Here/there – true subject
always follow the verb
9-
In sentences that include *sums of money*, periods
of time or distances – a singular verb is used.
10-
Nouns such as “Mathematics” , “civics” , “news”
, though look to be in plural form are singular
in meaning hence take singular verb.
